The Scent of the Coffee Flowers

Last night, I noticed the most amazing scent floating through the air. It was strong, yet sweet. I thought maybe it was the sugar cane but the sugar cane grows too far away from us to get the scent.

Our friends at dinner last night told me it is the coffee flowers that are smelling so good and the coffee beans are being picked now.

We walked into Atenas this morning and for the first time I noticed a field of coffee plants en route. The beans were colored red and I could detect the same sweet smell. It gets stronger at night.

Wow!!!

Hi! I believe, there may have been a misunderstanding. To the best of my (limited) understanding of all things Costa-Rican, it's the 'corn plant' Dracaenna fragrans, which is blooming like crazy right now, which has this heavenly scent. I was told that they're blooming more heavily than usual this year, hence the overwhelming perfume. And they're used as living fences, so they're everywhere. I'm not positive, but it makes sense, since, as you said, coffee berries are harvested right now, so there shouldn't be any blooms, right? Unless it all happens simultaneously?

Thanks for the input. I too wondered how coffee plants could be picked and blooming at the same time ...... I need to research that. We were also told it might be the sugar cane which definitely is blooming now.

Anyway, on my next walk I'm going to pay attention to the dracaena plants, take some photos, sniff the air and I'll let you know what I find.
