Pizza il Capo, Grecia, Costa Rica

Earlier this week, we visited Pizza il Capo in the Mall Plaza Grecia  and right next to Pops ice cream shop. We had been wanting to try their pizzas. They open at 11:30am and we arrived shortly after, were seated right away and given menus.

For drinks, Lance ordered Gallo Tapado Irish red ale, an artensial beer brewed in Grecia. I decided on the limonada con hierba buena, which was icy cold and so tasty. For pizzas, I went with the gorgonzola and Lance had the Caribbean. We decided on the personal portion size (four slices) and we could only eat half so took the rest home for a later snack.

We’ll be back - they have pasta dishes too. Service was fast and friendly and the food was delicious.

Pizza Night

This past Friday, we decided to order in a pizza for our dinner. We use Pizza Olivera in Atenas, open from 10:00am to 10:00pm, express 2446-5930. They are located west of Banco Nacional.

We have ordered from them before - the pizza was very good and delivery was prompt, the pizza arriving by taxi.

Lance placed both orders and said the first call was Spanish speaking only and the second call was Spanish with some English.

Since we liked our first pizza so much, we ordered the same again which was the Olivera Especial, grande, 16 slices. Price 6,900 colones (about $13.00) plus whatever tip is given to the taxi driver. This is one big pizza, loaded with cheese, ham, ground beef, mushrooms, pepperoni, red peppers, onions and something called locineta and I can't find a translation for that word.

So far, we have had two meals (four servings) with this pizza and the remainder is in the freezer for one more meal for two people. Our $13.00 pizza has/will provide us with six portions at a cost of about $2.16 per portion. An excellent bargain and yummy to boot.

Pizza Night!

About once a month, I get the urge for pizza so I put the call out to friends after deciding on a day and time. It's casual - no pressure to go - and please bring friends, the more the merrier.

Last night, about 14 of our friends showed up at Ristorante Pizzeria Alida, on highway 3 (the road to Orotina and Puntarenas). They are open Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 am to 10:00 pm and closed on Monday and Tuesday. Their telephone number is 2446-4060.

Directions: 700 meters west and 50 meters north of the Coopeatenas gas station on highway 3 (our only gas station). Solution: take a taxi there if you are unfamiliar with the area. Otherwise, there is plenty of parking around the restaurant.

When Alida's is open, you will see a table outside of the gate with a tablecloth and wine bottles on it. If they are not there, the restaurant is not open.

This restaurant is run by partners Alida and Nicolas. The pizzas (thin crust) are baked in a wood fired oven. Alida is the chef and Nicolas runs the front of the house. They have no trouble with a large group suddenly showing up. Nicolas and an assistant effortlessly grouped together several tables to make one large one for us, orders were taken quickly and dinner was served in a timely manner.

As is usual in Costa Rica, this restaurant is open air ... a roof of course but not enclosed on all sides. There is nothing better then enjoying a good meal with the tropical breezes blowing in, especially when it is dark and the skies are giving us a light show with sheet lightning.

Total cost of our meal for two: 17,000 colones (about $34 CAD). We ordered the Dellacasa pizza and half a liter of white wine. The final total includes taxes and tip. We had enough pizza left over for snacks the next day. Pizza is not the only thing on the menu. There are pastas too, but I have not tried them so far. The pizzas keep calling me! We have never been disappointed eating at Alida's.

This restaurant was awarded a 2013 Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor. And now for the photos:

From The Menu .. we ordered the Dellacasa pizza.
The DellaCasa ... so good.

New Italian Restaurant in Atenas

Bella Vista is a newly opened Italian restaurant on highway 3. Heading west from Atenas on highway 3, it is on the left, a short distance outside of town. There is a banner sign on the fence but it doesn't face traffic so you will have to watch for it. The building is wood and looks small from the outside but that is deceiving.

We've eaten here twice, both times ordering pizzas made in their wood fired oven. The staff is very welcoming and hard working. The space inside is quite large. There are three separate areas to dine in - one is in front of the pizza oven so you can watch the activity there. There are also tables outside under cover.

White linen napkins are used - a rarity these days. We were served, gratis, bruchettas as an appetizer. The pizzas are thin crust and there is a really good selection of varieties to try. Next visit I plan to try one of the pasta dishes.

They did not have their liquor license on our last visit but apparently it is in the works.

You can also call and order a pizza for pickup. Bella Vista's phone number is 2446-5184. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Pizza Delivery

Tonight I tried to order a pizza for home delivery from a pizza place in Atenas that advertises delivery. Well, that went nowhere fast.

They didn't understand me, I didn't understand them - it was a disaster.

So we ended up eating crackers with sliced tomatoes and cheese - not a bad meal actually and perhaps healthier than pizza with the works. For dessert, we had lime sherbet that I made with our own limes.
